Postcard From the Teens

For those of you who haven't known us longer than the past 257 days, this is not my and P's first stab at long-distance correspondence. Long before our no shopping plight began, and way before the re-introduction of skinny jeans into the new millennium, P and I used to live in separate cities. Back then it was I who lived in Canada (Halifax) and she in the U.S. (New York City). Writing letters then, as our blogging is now, was one of the ways we kept in touch.

What is so awesome about this postcard (see below), besides it being representative of an amazing twenty-year long friendship, is that even then, in the fall of 1996, we could still be found talking shop. I love that P sent the letter on an Esprit postcard when she really could have sent it on any of the millions of cards available of the New York City skyline. (This card may have even come from an outlet mall and would have made me insanely jealous at the time, Canada was just not privy to outlets in the 90's!). Then she refers to her date for the evening as "J. Crew Man". Whether it was because he worked at J. Crew or he looked like he was from a J. Crew catalog-I would guess the latter- it doesn't matter. What matters is that fashion has always been a part of our lives, but not just in a material sense. We can survive without the purchases because deep down we will always have the memories.

And, P, in case I didn't respond, all is well...but I miss you, too.

Love, A
