The closest I could find to the pair that were once mine... Oh, Frye Platform Sandals! I have thought of you often!
As I was falling asleep last night, a vision came to me: terracotta leather platform sandals. Gorgeous, unique, like nothing else I own. I began imagining just how perfectly my sandals will fit with the new spring/summer trends, how excited I am to finally wear them (I've had them for years but they're hardly worn, practically brand new!) and how great it will be to finally wear them shopping - okay, okay, I strayed from this particular platform sandal fantasy to my regular daily shopping fantasy. (It's such a great fantasy because I'm shopping!) But I digress...
Not only have I digressed, I have also completely forgotten that I got rid... of those sandals years ago! Which brings me to my point; yes it's good to clean out your closet every now and then, but don't forget to be conscious while you are doing it. Okay, obviously you need to be conscious when you clean out your closet. I mean conscious in the 365 Fashion Rehab way.
I have been teased a lot, and was ultimately admitted into Fashion Rehab, because of the size of my closet (which is actually more of a room, so you can see how that works). And so, I have felt it was my duty and obligation to pare it down on a semi-regular basis. The problem is, I have never been very good at cleaning out my closet, as is clear from the thoughtless rejection of my marvy vintage Frye platforms. And without the proper Weeding Out Regulations, or WORs, I ended up parting with things I actually loved and should have hung on to. As a result, I put off cleaning out my closet for fear that I would Salvation Army something that should never be Salvation Army'd (like my pristine, beautiful Frye sandals - I am still not over it, clearly. Someone out there got a serious score!).
An example of a bad WOR is what I call the Tit for Tat buying practice which says, "Every time I bring home something new, something old has to get the axe." I want to caution you on this way of thinking. While it may work for some, it is a slippery slope. And if you do use this stipulation, do so when replacing something i.e. my last pair of black socks has a huge hole in the heel - time for a new pair! And furthermore, if you have to employ this fascist level of rigidity, perhaps you just shouldn't be shopping in the first place. After all, your closet should ideally be a place of peace and harmony, not a place where all your lovely and beautiful pieces hang in fear of death by replacement.
And so, I have decided to come up with a whole list of brand new WORs! And I can't wait to share them with you... in The Ones That Got Away - part 2!
Love, P

Hey my rehab sister! I couldn't agree with you more. I have tossed many a splendid thing and held onto maybe a few not so fabulous things. Sometimes when you start cleaning out the closet you can't stop. I would love to rent a storage space so I never have to make any tossing decisions again! Love, A
O, yes, I know this particular woe VERY VERY well. I pride myself on being a religious weeder. But I, too, have fallen victim to my own righteousness and have over-weeded on occasion. LHR loves to remind me of this when I try to cajole her into pitching stuff she bought when were in Grade 9, for instance.
Most hilariously, one of my MAJOR regrets is a funky belt I weeded out about 15 years ago--LHR snagged it. And still wears it. And it looks/is GREAT. And it reproaches me, every time I see it jazzing up one of LHR's great outfits. :)
My problem is even if I buy things to replace other things, I can't bear to toss them until they REALLY rip beyond repair.
(Jeans, underwear and tops..)
Me, too, FB! That is definitely one of the reasons why I am teased for the size of my closet. I take really good care of my clothes and rarely feel like there is a need to toss them, unless I am feeling guilty, or going through some kind of EPT!
But we live and we learn, no?

YYZ~ I send lots of love to you and LHR. My only question is; are we blog-kindred spirits???
