Even though we still have just over 45 days to go (is it crazy that it still feel loooooo-ng?), I have let shopping thoughts creep in to my mind. Actual thoughts, not just fantasies.
One of my favourite things about shopping and spending my hard-earned cash, is choosing to spend it in independently-owned boutiques. And so, for our fabulous Canadian fans - and our fantastic US fans who are up for crossing the border or shopping online, I thought I would share with you my top 5 favourite independently owned stores (in no particular order...)
I Heart Accessories - Toronto, Ontario
This tiny store is filled to the rafters with some of the greatest bags, cutest hair accessories and gorgeous glam-iest shades (Betsey Johnson's sunglasses collection is one of the latest additions to the inventory!). Not to mention the brilliant collection of baubles and bijoux! Even within the small space, owner Natalie Colalillo has managed to merchandise the store in such a way that you don't feel overwhelmed and everything is easily accessible. It's no surprise that I personally heart accessories and clothes and shoes and bags, etc... Now, I heart this store, too!
Biscuit General Store - Halifax, Nova Scotia
Now I may be totally biased because I used to work at Biscuit. Actually it was Wendy, the beautiful red-head who owns this marvelous shop, who gave me my first real job in retail. I used to accompany Woo on buying trips and I have always said she has the best eye out there. Biscuit has the best product mix of any store I have ever, ever been in. And that's a lot of stores... When shopping in Hali-wood, there simply is nowhere better. Everyone who has ever worked (or who still works) there has kept in touch, if not with each other, than definitely with Wendy. Once a Biscuit, Always a Biscuit.

Ewanika - Toronto, Ontario
The clothes in Trish's shop are are gorgeous mix of beautiful neutrals with a pop of colour here and there. Trish, a tall gorgeous woman reflects the garments hanging from the hangers. She has discerning taste and whatever she doesn't design and craft herself, she usually brings in from Paris. Throw in a few Canadian lines like the brilliant Ca Va de Soie and you've pretty much got everything you need. So, if you're yearning for some new pieces and can't make it to the fashion capital of the world, get yourself over to Ewanika toute suite!
Lola & Emily - Montreal, Quebec
Lola & Emily was recommended to me by my dear friend H and though one of their two locations is in the same neighborhood where my family lives in Montreal, I rarely get to go there (especially in the last ten months!). They carry some of my favourite lines (Fillipa K, Free People) and, to be honest, when I walk in, I feel a bit like I'm in Biscuit, which makes me immediately happy. The clothes are stylish, the staff helpful and the changing rooms are ample (essential if you're not feeling your sassiest). It is an undisputed fact that there is some great shopping Montreal, and Lola & Emily is at the top of that list. P.S. Also, they have a blog, which I am totally addicted to!

Red Pegasus - Toronto, Ontario
Hands down my go-to store for birthday gifts, thank you gifts, in fact all gifts. And they have the greatest card selection in town! Walking into Red Peg is like coming over to a friends house for tea; it's warm, inviting and there is always someone there to share a smile or a chat. Their gift wrapping is awesome and their staff is so wonderful. After being a patron for almost ten years, I finally got the chance to introduce myself to Lea(h) who I have seen working there on and off over the years - it was great to finally put a name to the face. Plus, Rachel the owner is passionate about the neighborhood (which just happens to also be where Mr. Darling and I live) and making positive changes, which just makes me want to shop there even more.
Love, P

HI P:
I actually grew up around the corner from Red Pegasus and still visit my mom who still lives there.. I love love that store, I bought the most amazing leather purse there 2 years ago, by a Local Canadian designer. THat's what I love about that store they promote Local Canadian artists.
I remember that store 11 years ago.. when I was able to purchase my eldest child's clothes there...they had the cutest coats and hats and sweaters for children... oh well, the years do roll by and Red P sure has evolved and just kept getting better.
Who knows P I just might run into you in the neighbourhood... and if I do, I will most definitely stop you to shake your hand and congratulate you for this inspiring journey ....
Great post! I also love Red Pegasus and Ewanika-- excellent choices! I also love that Red Pegasus is all about boosting our 'hood-- I always feel great about supporting local and Canadian artisans and companies when I shop there.
And I will be checking out your first recommendation: I have some gal-pal birthdays coming up!
I love an independently-owned boutique! They always have such unique things and I find the customer service experience is far more personal to what you'd find in a chain retailer! Oh...and I also adore Biscuit. It is my favorite downtown boutique in Hali!
Great blog! xo
It's so great to hear how much you all love and support your locally owned stores! Just like a great wardrobe is full of high/low price points, a great shopping day in full of independent/corporate stores!
Keep up the great work!
And 4068Sabiba - thanks for your kind words!
