My closet (left side). I put my everyday shoes in the shoe organizer for easy access, organized tops and dresses by color and kept only the jeans I am currently wearing on the shelf above. Handbags and additional shoes are stored to the left, while boots and larger bags sit nicely on the floor.
I took tons of notes while going through my closet (not to mention an insane amount of photos with an iPhone App, but that I will save that for another day!). I can't emphasize enough how important this is. These notes are the key to discovering your past shopping patterns and building better future buying habits. There is nothing fancy about them, they really are just like streaming trains of thought. Here is a sampling of the notes about my closet:
- Absolutely no more basic layering tanks! No more long sleeve cotton layering tops... I own an excess of cotton.
- Must own a proper bustier strapless bra situation (my current ones have dents in the boob area, is that weird?). Also some Spanx. And some Hanky Pankys and new bras.
- No more buying black sandals!!! Flat or strappy. Nada. Nunca. No way. Just stop. Time to give another color a chance. Also, how many variations of brown and black boots does one girl need? I guess prior to Fashion Rehab my answer would have been "a lot".
- I HAVE A BLACK SHOE ADDICTION. (see above) I seriously had no idea!
- No more spaghetti strap dresses or long sleeve dresses but say yes to tank, halter and t-shirt dresses! Also why are some dresses so mini? So many dresses I own are actually a tunic on me which means I can't wear any of them except with leggings. Fine for fall, weird for summer.
- Do not buy more sweaters except for a lightweight grey and/or off-white cardi. No more outerwear (the 32 coat scenario), except still lusting over a boyfriend blazer for summer. Kate Moss looks fab in hers here.
- Accessories. Need new stretchy black belt, mine is held together by a piece of thread. Maybe a metallic one, too. Am totally fine in the brown and navy belt department. Do not buy a new hat. Would love some lucite. (Vintage shop, anyone?)
The right side of my closet has sweaters, skirt, pants, handbags and a few other things. My newly organized jewelry sits on top of my dresser alongside my hats, and little baskets keep my "underthings" nice and neat in my top drawer.
So what have I learned? Well, it turns out I actually have a nice collection of classic clutches, coats, long sleeve dresses, shoes & boots, pants, layering shirts, cardis and sweaters, belts, and hats. I have succeeded in wearing them for the year and have still managed to feel good about myself and look (so I think) stylish! What parts of my wardrobe have suffered? And where am I going to restock? Bathing suits, underwear, nice fitting tops and tanks, dresses (both day and cocktail), sunglasses, one possible "everyday bag", and a few accessories to bring everything up to date.
It is a long and arduous task but SO worth it in the end. Come on and try it. What are you waiting for?

I am also taking stock of my closet as I declutter, commit to only buying classic pieces and then implementing my own fashion rehab.
I will follow you on Twitter, 'cause I can't wait for real-time update of your shopping trip!
Hey YM! I love that you are implementing your own Fashion Rehab. Send us a pic of your de-cluttered closet when you are done, we'd love to see it!

ok, decluttering is very hard and i am not being ruthless enough. so far, every "stupid" piece i yank out that i haven't worn for ages, has a story to it. I know that its just memories and that its not practical to hold on to things just because of it represented of a time past... but i have always been one to who finds it hard to let go.. especially when you spend so much wasted money on impractical items. I need to bring a friend and perhaps my husband to help me .. (my hubby would be ruthless as they get), the only thing i am scared...yikes..
time for me to step up and take an "HONEST" approach to this without fear and insecurity!...

Hey, S! There is nothing wrong with holding on to an item because it has a story! I think if a piece has value (sentimental or monetary) it is worth keeping. The items that I had to purge were t-shirts and tanks that I was holding onto because I "needed" one in a specific color. The problem is I wasn't wearing it! Why bother keeping something for the color if you hate the style or it is ill-fitting? Now I must go out and buy some replacements, but after several years I think it is okay!
If you have a lot of storage space you could just pack stuff up and move it into the garage. I live in a small place so there is not a lot of room for surplus. I still did keep about three shopping bags full of things on the floor of my closet that I am not wearing now but will re-visit months from now. I say enlist the help of a friend, not your man!

me and my closet are moving to a new house next month and I plan on taking some serious notes/pictures during the process!
Im a print and color fanatic so things are going to get wild!!!
I am envious of how organized your closet is. Mine is an absolute disasterrrr. I think I need to do a Fashion Rehab as well, I have a stacked closet but I always feel like I have nothing to wear bc it's so messy, disorganized and cluttered
I'm a fan of notes.
Otherwise I repeat the same mistakes. It's like anthropologists who dissect ancient civilizations by digging through their trash dumps.
Formerly unbeknowst patterns emerged for me. Like a large number of items I've bought at Kohl's don't work out for me.
Hummmm--- maybe that's someplace I shouldn't shop?
Great post! I'm trying to maximize the usefulness of my closet but making sure most pieces can be worn with multiple outfits. When you document your closet, you can patterns that you wouldn't see otherwise. I wish I could be more aware like you! =)
It is true, notes really do help! Taking pictures is also amazing but not as necessary. I found when I was shopping in NYC this past weekend that I was really using my lists to help me shop. I knew my closet project was a success when I passed up these insanely amazing Elizabeth and James booties for half-off. I wanted them but knew I didn't need them!!!
I have even found that I love my clothes more after taking out the ones that just didn't fit/were worn out etc. and I am not so lazy about putting things away!
Let me know how all of your closet makeovers go!

I'd like to own that closet. It's spacious for me, 'cause i got a little toilet dresses. As for me there are two problems. The closet is too small and i have nothing to dress on.
That is an awfully astounding column you've posted. Thanks a lot for that a fantastically amazing post!
