A photo of my rolling rack from "Change Your Closet, Change Yourself?" - think it's time to overhaul the whole thing?
Since surviving our year, I have been thinking about taking it a step further - you see, my closet is actually a room that also doubles as my office. I live in a wonderful, yet quite old house where the rooms are big and square-shaped and the closets are tiny and, well, tiny-shaped. Most of the rooms have closets, but they are so small that the the only thing you can fit in them is me! (And maybe a pair of slippers.) Thus, my closet/office is a wide open room with a lot of stuff but not a lot of organization (California Closets - where are you?!). Having an entire room as your closet may seem like the greatest thing in the world (cause who's kidding who? The "office" part is a small vintage telephone table in the corner by the window on which sits my laptop, above which hangs a calendar. C'est tout!) and I am well aware of how lucky I am to have the space, but it is a bit of a mish-mash. Two dressers, when I think I could do with one if I put up some shelves somewhere, everything pushed back against the walls, a wardrobe that is in desperate need of cleansing - another part of this undertaking; I plan on hosting a clothing swap and clearing out about a third of the goods! Ambitious, I know but if Fashion Rehab has taught me anything, it has taught me that it's okay to let stuff go that is inappropriate/doesn't fit/is old and its only purpose is memories.
As for the dressing room, any eye I may have for beauty seems to apply only to clothes, accessories and people (Mr. Darling is gorgeous, in my eyes, and have you seen my BFF?), but not so much in the interior design department. In this regard, I am a great appreciator, less of a creator. So I ask you; what would you do with a square room with blank walls, wood floors and a limited budget? Paint? Wallpaper? Cover an entire wall with mirrors? (Good God - no!) Send me your ideas - once the transformation is complete, I promise to post photos/video and show off the final product.
Love, P

Ooooh a room makeover! It sounds so exciting! I say nay to the wallpaper only because it is such a pain to put up/take down. What if you wallpapered a massive canvas and hung it up to add splash to one wall? More thoughts to come...Love, A
i like putting fabric up on the walls - for a bedroom for a dressing room. i have a couple of scarves that, due to their material work better as tapestries. You could also go to a fabric store or an interior design store and order a large swatch of a print that you like.
i used to have a huge walk-in closet and i covered the back of it with purple velvet curtains to give it some drama. I also already had the curtains and wasn't sure what to do with them, but they really made the closet feel like a special place. I put a Monet poster (les irises mauves) on the door, and even had space for a little chair.
You could put a decorative mirror and decorative chair in the room, just to make it feel more special. I wish I could do this in my apartment!
A has a great idea about the wallpaper, but I think one wall would be gorgeous-- with free-floating shelves on it, maybe around your dresser, as a place to display really pretty bags (on a rotating basis, obviously, to save them from dust!). I live in a similar house and my closet situation is DIRE. My shoes live in the basement in the laundry room and I cannot find a dresser to fit my space/wardrobe. I do love to decorate, though, so I keep dreaming up ideal solutions.
Good luck and have fun! Make it girly! Make it YOURS! And then post photos!
Right, must go by lottery ticket so I can afford a closet makeover! $50 million, here I come!
apartmenttherapy.com and use the search engine for dressing rooms
I've always loved the idea of using your functional stuff as decoration--hanging your purses up, displaying shoes--rather than having separate items (items only for decoration and items that are used). I like the idea of a shelving unit where shoes can be lined up prettily, hooks on the walls for purses, etc. I look forward to seeing how you end up re-doing it!
Paint three walls in a neutral color, then add a splash of muted color to one wall! And put up a nice full-size mirror with an antique looking frame on the colored wall. Maybe add some hooks to the colored wall to put up your jewellery? Just thinking aloud here. Good luck with remodeling!
