Independence Day - I Heart Accessories

Just in time - ooops, okay, almost in time for the 4th of July, we here at 365 FR are really excited to share with you another new feature: Independence Day where we highlight independent boutique owners and designers that we think you must know about ASAP (if you don't already!),

We are super stoked that the first one in our series is the lovely and fashionable Natalie C from I Heart Accessories. You drooled over her prizes during the No Shop Challenge, now hear about what she has to say on everything from Betsey to Jackie to Zooey!

365 FR: What inspired you to start your business?
NC: I always knew I would be self-employed one day, I just wasn't sure when, or how. I was flipping channels one night and this documentary about Betsey Johnson was on. My eyes and ears were glued to her story as it went through her life as a performer, an artist and a successful fashion designer. She started her business with artistic vision and passion and continues to love what she does. I instantly felt like I was cheating myself by doing what I thought I should be doing, and not what I wanted to be doing. That's when the wheels started turning.

365 FR: Who's style, past or present, do you most admire?
NC: I'd have to go with Jackie O. Her feminine and classic style is one that will never retire, and she has always looked so perfectly, yet effortlessly put together. Every time I see a picture of her, I instantly want everything she's wearing in it.

365 FR: Which celebrity would you most like to see in your shop?
NC: I think it would be awesome if Zooey Deschanel came in and started trying stuff on. She doesn't take herself too seriously, and has fun with fashion. I love how one day she can be super girly, with a vintage dress and bows in her hair, and the next, rock it out with a band t-shirt and cat-eye shades.

365 FR: What advice do you have for someone wanting to start their own business?
NC: I would say the most important thing is to just stop "wanting" and start "doing". Believe strongly in your ideas and don't be swayed by those who doubt you. So many people told me I couldn't, and I did. Also, wake up early, and treat yourself well. Exercise. The better you feel, the more motivation you will have to push forward with your ideas.

365 FR: Who/What are some of your favorite independent boutiques/designers?
NC: I love Poor Little Rich Girl on Yonge St. just south of Eglinton. It's an awesome dress shop full of the prettiest outfits. I also love Risque in the Annex. They have been there forever and always have the cutest pieces. I can never visit the area without popping in and buying something.

365 FR: What do you love most about your shop/being your own boss?
NC: Where do I start? I am grateful everyday that I have such anawesome place to wake up and go to. I'm especially proud of the fact that I am able to support myself with something that I've created. The whole experience has been extremely rewarding. As far as the shop goes, buying is my absolute favourite thing to do. Picking out the newest things that I know my customers will love is really the most exciting part of my job.

365 FR: What is your fave fashion season?
NC: Spring/Summer without a doubt. It's so much more fun and flirty than Fall/Winter. People are more inclined to let their hair down a little and try something new like a statement necklace or a floral headpiece. Also, everyone and everything looks betterwhen the sun's shining.

365 FR: If you were going to go shopping in your store today, what would you buy?

NC: I would most likely buy one of the new headbands by Headmistress Accessories. They are so chic and rich looking. You feel like a princess when you put one on. I'de also buy a pair of the Betsey Johnson sunglasses because each pair is so uniquely fabulous and have the cutest adornments. Lastly, I'de buy a pair of Lindsay Phillips ballet flats in white gold. They are super cute and shimmery, and you can change the tops to change up their look.

So, what are you waiting for? Get your fashionable butts over to I Heart Accessories or if you don't live in Toronto, buy online here.

Love, A&P
