Independence Day - Blush Boutique & Dogeared Bracelet Giveaway!

Today's Independence Day feature (meaning independent boutique, nothing to do with holidays and fireworks - although this store does make us feel like celebrating!) is Blush Boutique, located in Anchorage, AK. Owned by former Los Angeles resident, Haley Welsome, Blush is a spot not to be missed. Carrying brands such as Current Elliot, BCBG, Ella Moss, Mike and Chris, and Chan Luu; Haley's customers keep coming back for her discerning taste and warm personality.

Also, in true 365FR spirit, Haley and her best friend, Jules Laird live thousands of miles away from each other (like a couple of other girls we know...). So, how do they stay in touch? Jules (a production manager in Irvine, CA, at Too Faced cosmetics) accompanies Haley on her multi-annual buying trips to Los Angeles. 365FR: What inspired you to start your business?

HW: I went to college to be a teacher, graduated, and then decided to get into real estate because I was living in Southern California and the industry was booming. After a year of working as a realtor I realized it wasn't my true passion. I had worked in fashion retail most of my young life and felt that it was my true passion. On a family trip to Hawaii my sister and I had a conversation about what we'd like to do if money didn't matter. I told her I'd like to have my own boutique. She lived in my hometown of Anchorage, AK, at the time and had just bought an Aveda Lifestyle Spa. Upon her return home from our vacation she discovered a retail space directly across the street and immediately called me. My husband & I sold our home in Hermosa Beach and embarked on our journey to Alaska - where we have just celebrated Blush's 5 year anniversary!

365FR: Who's style, past or present, do you most admire?

HW: Gwyneth Paltrow is always my favorite. Hands down.

365FR: Which celebrity would you most like to see in your shop/wearing your clothes?

HW: That's a good question. I would say Gwyneth but I'm not sure I'd want her to come in my store, I might act like a fool! Honestly, I'm greatly appreciative to all who walk through our doors. It is because of all our loyal customers that we get to do what we love.

365FR: What advice do you have for someone wanting to start their own business?

HW: My advice would be to make sure it's truly what you LOVE doing. If you're passionate about your job then it becomes a joy. Don't set out to do something for the wrong reasons, or reasons that will tire and fade.

365FR: Who/What are some of your favorite independent boutiques/designers?

HW: There are 3 beautiful stores I love: Wright's, Lulu's, and The Beehive in Manhattan Beach, California. Although I don't own any of his pieces, I think Phillip Lim's designs are lovely. Cotton & Cashmere pieces from INHABIT are quite luxurious. All of Robindira Unsworth's jewelry! Calleen Cordero's handcrafted boots.

365FR: What do you love about being your own boss?

HW: The little things really. Seeing my fellow neighbors everyday, opening the door in the morning, turning on the lights, playing my choice of music, drinking coffee and helping women find what they are looking for. Whether it is a special something for an evening out, or something to lift their spirits, I get to play a part in their happiness.

365FR: What is your fave fashion season?

HW: Fall. I love boots, jackets, and tights. I was born and raised in Alaska, and even though I lived in Los Angeles for ten years, I am an Alaskan at heart.

365FR: If you were going to shop in your store today, what would you buy?

HW: The Venice Pebble leather handbag in espresso by Hammit and the long gold and oxidized silver with clear quartz necklace from Robindira Unsworth!
