Freya Beha Erichsen at Prada, Spring 2011 - That's some good-lookin' shadow!

Ever since I cleaned out my closet, I have been inspired to do the same to my makeup counter (it's not really a counter as much as a ledge). I'm tired of looking at a makeup collection that's as cluttered (if not more) than my closet was just a few short days ago! But unlike clothes, shoes and bags, making over your makeup takes a lot more time because one has to employ a method that is more trial and error, and less Toss, DIY and Swap. But you gotta start somewhere!
My plan of attack (POA) is to find brands I love and stick to them, regardless of the sticker price (your reading this from a girl who still has a hard time resisting a sale, even 18-months out of Fashion Rehab!). But a deal is not a deal if you don't get your money's worth - consider that another lesson from a (reformed) shopaholic. At the end of this weeding out process, I hope to have a comprehensive list for when I'm feeling flush and for when I'm feeling a bit more frugal. Ideally, the end result will be a mix of both. As I said before, this will take time.
After our amazing trip to NYC last spring and, specifically, our very successful visit to Sephora, I discovered that my number one choice for mascara is YSL. And since I can't always afford the YSL, I also now know (after an unfortunate incident with a green tube that shall (not) remain nameless - read about it!) that L'Oréal Voluminous is my go-to on the lower end price point.
Next up? Eyeshadow! I have a couple I am going to try out: Lancome for the flush days and Rimmel for the frugal days... We'll see how it goes and I promise to keep you posted. In the meantime, help a Rehab Sister out and let me know: what's your pick for best eyeshadow?
Love, P

I really like Bobbi Brown eyeshadows. They're very pigmented and very smooth. Not cheap, but definitely for the "flush" days!
My favorite eyeshadows hands down are from Edward Bess (neutrals) and Chanel singles (neutrals and the odd special color). I've tossed everything else because these have perfect finishes. They are definitely for the "flush" times, but I don't amass a lot of colors.
Lise Watier 4 colour palettes
I also will only use the Lise Watier black liquid liner and 24 hour Glam mascara as well. I am converted.
I also love Kiss Me mascara - a Japanese brand that runs around 40$
And Mac foundation since I only need a little dot to cover most of my imperfections.
I just got some YSL shadow testers and they're absolutely amazing...deep brown with a little gold shimmer and a really pretty forest green.
As for mascara, I love Lancome's Hypnose-never flakes, clumps and I can get pretty good volume too!
Bobby Brown. I love the eye shadows but I found this channel ones that I've had for a couple of months but they are almost gone! you know, is one of those things that you buy thinking they are OK and they turn being EXCELLENT!
Lots of beautiful spring colors out there.

I love MAC's because they're highly pigmented, but can be put on subtly. They have one of the best colour ranges too!
My mother is a "die-hard" YSL mascara user (I'm faithful to MAC studio fix lash, I highly suggest that, and for 16 dollars!) but her blush and eyeshadows are from Burberry, which are on the more expensive side. Since you and I both have the pleasure of living in Toronto, Burberry cosmetics are carried at Holts on Bloor.
Clinique has some cute colours, but I have to say, they don't really stay. But, I don't use primers. I read somewhere though that you can use a light brushing of foundation instead of primer though on your eyelids.
Hey, Rehab Sister! I vote for Urban Decay shadow all the way (and agree with what Lisa said about Clinique, pretty colors but don't stay on). I would also venture to say that Chanel would be a good bet but would only throw down that kind of cash for a neutral everyday color so you will get your money's worth. I am in need of some shadow, too. Why isn't sephora in my backyard? Love, A
bobbi brown!i've tried MAC, clinique, YSL (and about to try lancome), but bobbi brown is still the best option for me!i just started using their cream eyeshadows and they do wonders!
I love nars eyeshadows. They can be pricey but there are so many awesome colors, neutral or otherwise. To me Nars is like urban decay but better! :) (ps sephora has some great sets out right now for around $60)
Chanel is great too, but again pricey. I'd say nars is more affordable and equally as good. I've seen some good deals on sephora for stila and smashbox palettes, (like $10-20 palettes) so that may be worth investigating! I haven't tried stila but I have a smashbox palette I like. Also Bobbi brown shadows are nice too, and I feel like they have more matte options than Chanel or nars, so that maybe be good if you're looking for neutrals.
I'm interested to hear your thoughts on making over your makeup! I think my vanity needs a major overhaul!
Personally, I have been happy using Maybelline eyeshadows. And it's not surprise, if you think that Maybelline is owned by the same company as Lancome and L'Oréal...
Without doubt all eye shadow colors are Mac for me! And if you need to reaally make the colours pop or stay long while sweating (for stage for example) I wear a primer first. That was best discovery this last year.
Mascara... have not found one that I stick to... may try your suggestion! And any foundations for me are Clinique for everyday, Mac for heavy duty stage make-up
Best!
MAC shadows are really great. They have great staying power, and a little goes a long way. Plus - the recycling program (return 6 empty containers and get a free lipstick) must be a good deal for reformed shopaholics?
MAC eyeshadows are really great. Very blendable, highly pigmented, good staying power and a little goes a long way. And, for reformed (or would-be reformed shopaholics like me) the recycling program works out great. Return any 6 empty containers and get a free lipstick! If you have any unused MAC makeup now, just empty them out and bring them in for a free lipstick!
For an all-in-one nude palette, Dior 5 colour palette in Iridescent Leather is for me. It does have a slight shimmer but not over the top. Otherwise, MAC does a whole range in shimmers and non-shimmers. Plus you can pick and mix!
Hi, so happy to include you in my last edit of Links a La Mode ... great to discover your blog. Just followed. Keep in touch!

Holier than Now
Chanel for subtle color coverage, Too Faced for brighter options. I still wear Trucco Mermaid almost every day, which no longer exists.
Good luck!
bobbi brown for flush days and barry m for when you just want an amazing range of colours!
Hello....I'm on the link list with you this week and wanted to stop by and say HI:) Love your post, and I also love elf cosmetics...really affordable and great eyeshadows:)
Nice to meet you!
why oh why did sephora leave the UK? love this post - am in the process of moving house and throwing away lots of things i don't need - this is a challenge with makeup, as am a makeup artist, but i have so many products i never actually use, so clearout time! agree with voluminous mascara as a great inexpensive option, but disagree re ysl - i find they dry too quickly. lancome hypnose is my mascara of choice. eyeshadow varies wildly, but i'll always have a soft spot for stila (amazing amount of pigment, but prone to cracking) and mac pigments when requiring full-on colour. bobbi brown is a safe option, and rimmel is great value. i could go on and on and on...
I love urban decay and MAC. They're really pigmented and probably the best that I've tried. I agree with everyone about clinique, nice colors but they don't stay on. I have gotten them to stay on longer with the urban decay primer though.
