LUST-HAVES

Lust-Have #1

Yes, it has begun. And right at the top of the list is an item that I have been obsessed with for months now. Who doesn't want to buy a sweet new pair of skinnies at the beginning of the season???

That's right. The Gap Skinny Jeans at a cool $69.50. They're just so...marvy. (sniff.)

Brushstroke Sheath Dress by LC Lauren Conrad for Kohl's $50

So cute. So perfect for cocktails with the ladies. Throw on your black booties and chain link bag and you are ready to go. I'll meet you there, and the first round is on me.

Banana Republic dress $180

Sorry to give you the one-two dress punch on this, our 3rd "If I Could I Would..." installment. I had actually fully planned to write about something lusty from the makeup department. But then I my gaze (i.e. browser) fell upon this. Seriously, look at this Banana beauty. Day, night. Hot, cold. Dressed up or down... I'm Cole Porter all over and totally in L-O-V-E.

Sorel Plaid Boots $95

In case you didn't know, I live in a varying climate. A climate where, come December, having a solid pair of winter boots is beyond essential. Toronto is known for its extreme weather - bone-chillingly cold in winter, hot like soup in summer (though not this year. Am still in mourning...). Even though it pains me greatly to be highlighting such a cold weather item when I am still hoping for a mid-autumn heat wave, I feel these booties are way too cute to keep to myself. I saw them on Piperlimeand am now obsessed. These super rad boots are totally waterproof and warm to -50 celsius (-58 fahrenheit). And, who can resist the plaid? I mean, really! It doesn't get more Northern than these babies. So, I say, if we must endure the cold (wah!), we should do it in style.
And, as always, by we, I mean you!

It is simple. It is basic. It is stackable. And it is only $20. I would like five of these. How about you?

American Apparel Shiny Legging in Night Fever Black $46

Am still regretting not having bought these in my pre-Rehab days. Soooo should have snagged a pair when they first came out but you gotta have some serious cajones (and a perfect bod) to pull them off. Since I've stopped shopping, I feel more fearless fashion-wise. Is that weird?

Lust-Have #7

Ok, what I really wanted was a lip palette by Nars called "Best Of Lips" that retails at Saks for $50. Then I thought about it. Even though I still can't buy the above Cargo palette until 2010, it does seem like a reasonable price to pay for four super cute colors. Five months into Fashion Rehab has taught me that maybe paying $50 for lip gloss might just be a tad irresponsible. But what about paying $30 for Nars Bronzing Powder? Umm, yes please! Oh, I guess that is a whole other lust-story...

Lust-Have #8

The ones that got away... These should be called "When I Could've, I Should've"! I found these amazing Cole Haan black patent pumps for a steal at an outlet mall in Orlando about a year ago. (Oooh! Outlet mall...).
The newer version is pictured above and are $199. Why did I let them get away, you ask? Well, the story is I had two pairs clutched in my arms; the pumps and a pair of black patent flats. It seemed too excessive to buy both and I went with the flats because black flats were one of the things I was specifically looking for that day.
Big mistake. Huge. I really should have bought both. Cause the thing is - brace yourself - I don't own a proper pair of black pumps.
And they really were the most comfortable heels I have ever worn. Even if it was just in the store.

I love Topshop and I love this tunic. Perfect with leggings, skinny pants or on its own. I know this gem won't be around next year so if you would like to buy it for me I will email you my size.
Love, A
P.S. Just kidding!
(About the fact that I would ever wear this top on its own sans legwear, not about you buying it for me...)

Lust-Have #10

I complemented a stranger on these earrings the other night. She was super nice and told me she got them at Aldo. I, personally, am hankering for the gold, but either way, they are classic and a super steal at only $10 for both!

London Fog Camille Trench Coat, Londonfog.com, $99

While most parts of the U.S. and my native Canada prepare for snowball fights and snowy nights, those of us here in the San Francisco area are gearing up for our rainy season. What better way to enjoy it than with this cute London Fog trench? I, on the other hand, will have to embrace the winter in my old rubber boots and floral-print umbrella, sadly humming my own trench coat-less version of "Singin' in the Rain".

Betsey Johnson Carlos Sandal $100 (on sale!)

A little on the wild side, I know. But that's the point! Even though these sky high stilettos are tres of the moment (animal prints are big this season), the truth is animal prints done well are timeless. And these kitties? They really are the perfect blend between egdy and classic.

Lust-Have #14

After all, it is our anniversary, right?
Anyway, moving along to the land of reality...I found this other super cute crossbodybag from Forever 21 (shown below) for far less than the above "I would do anything for/I am obsessed with/so cute, so 80's" Marc Jacobs bag.

Metal Trim Shoulder Bag, Forever 21, $25.80

Either way I am clearly not getting any bag, any time soon, but thought I should share with you what is really going on in my fashion-deprived head.

Clinique High Impact Black Honey Mascara - limited edition $14

Ah... an oldie but a goodie. I'm sure most - if not all - of you are familiar with Clinique's infamous Black Honey lip gloss, but did you know they also make a Black Honey mascara? It is amazing! The first time I bought it, I fell completely in love and immediately wished I had stocked up on at least three tubes. (Shopping problem? Moi?) At the time, I was told it was a limited edition and figured it would be discontinued. But, much to my excitement, I discovered the tried and true makeup company (I would wager everyone has at least one green tube or silver compact in their bathroom/makeup bag) released it again a few Christmases ago as part of its holiday collection. So, now is the time to look. It is a great mascara all on its own - volumizing, no clumping, but even more than that, it is the most gorgeous eggplant-y shade that suits every eye colour. Think of it as electric blue mascara's older, more sophisticated sister.

Oh, and since mine is almost completely dried out, could someone pick one up for me? (Just kidding - kind of.)

Yummie Tummie Lace Bodysuit, net-a-porter.com, $110

I guess this really is a lust-have! You may think it is strange for me to air my "dirty laundry" on our blog for all to see, but what I have to say is this: Amen to this designer for this ultra-sexy, very chic, and totally tummy-firming updated version of yesterday's girdle.

HTG Denim Leggings, Forever 21, $19.90

The jegging. You either love them or you hate them. I think they are fabulous. Denim divas Paige and Hudson both make them at a much higher price point, but I don't think I would pay over $100 for such a trendy item. These ones are a great deal from Forever 21 and have contrast stitching (key when sporting the jegging) and belt loops.
So, what are you waiting for? Take one for the team and go out and get your jegging on.

Club Monaco flower headband $29

When The Mater was in town a little while ago, we went to Club Monaco on Bloor street where we bought her a gorgeous teal cashmere scarf for her birthday. While we were there, I came across this totally adorable headband. It fit my teeny tiny pea-head perfectly, didn't pinch and was super cute.

Headbands are enjoying a fabulous comeback right now. Sparkles, velvet, ribbons, or fabric flowers (like the one on my wee head above), they can be the perfect addition to any holiday outfit. So, as you have heard me plead so many times before; I can't, so could you?

Footzyrolls Ballet Slipper, $25

After attending a few cocktail parties this holiday season there is one thing I know for sure: my feet are SO sore. The last party I attended left me tip-toeing home, barefoot, with shoes in hand, because my aching feet just couldn't take it anymore.

If I owned the above "Footzyrolls" this would not have been a problem. These little slippers roll up and fit easily into your evening bag so that at any point during the night (or the next day for all of you sassy ladies!) you can kick off your stilettos and slip into some sassy flats. This allows relief for tired feet and you can now walk home with at least a bit if dignity knowing your feet have not been anywhere they shouldn't. As for the rest of your body, well that is absolutely none of my business.

Valentino Bow Bag $895 at Bergdorf Goodman

So, I figured I'd make the first Lust-Have of the new decade a good one! Actually, this edition of If I Could I Would is a nod to the lovely Miss Z, who was proudly carrying her own gorgey, silver metallic Bow Bag at dinner the other night. Z has amazing taste and impeccable style. She is an excellent shopping partner because she has a great eye, knows instinctively what works, what doesn't and why, and she always, always tells the truth. The Bow Bag sure looked great slung over Z's shoulder, but it couldn't hold a candle to the one accessory she always carries: kindness.

One thing that has been quite difficult whilst in Fashion Rehab is that we miss out on the latest in apparel and beauty technology (remember that Maybelline Vibrating Mascara?). Although some of you might balk at the thought of technology having anything to do with fashion, these thigh-toning booty-firming Reeboks could certainly prove you wrong. Not only are they cute for the gym, but they will also make your butt look fabulous in your favorite jeans (although not worn together, of course!).
Unfortunately (for everyone this time) they are almost entirely sold out. Perhaps Reebok will do a new collection this Spring for all of us to enjoy?

Burberry Slip-Ons $195 at Neiman Marcus

I have long been a lover of the slip-on style sneaker. I bought my first pair of "Spicoli's" ages ago (the black and white checkered Vans made famous by Sean Penn's character in "Fast Times at Ridgemont High") and have been in love with the surfer style ever since. After all, you can't wear heels every day, right?

T-Bags Terry Bandeau Bikini, $65, theoutnet.com

A picture is worth a thousand words, right? Well, what can you say when a recent photo of yourself includes you wearing the same bikini four years running? Um, absolutely nothing. This is because you can't actually tell where you are, or what year it is, due to the fact that every time you are at the beach you are wearing that same suit.

I am all for being conservative with the cash, ladies, but at some point we all need to upgrade. I would love it to be with this super-cute T-Bags two-piece. There seems to be a relationship between the last time I bought a bikini and when I moved to San Francisco (from Toronto four years ago). Is it weird to live in California and not be stocked in bathing suits? Apparently not. As any San Franciscan can attest, it just does not get that hot here, no matter what the time of year.

Sometimes I miss the sweaty summers of Toronto. Or maybe I just miss shoppingfor the sweaty summers in Toronto. Whatever the case may be, I can certainly tell you that the company I was recently keeping on my Caribbean holiday wished I was back cruising the bikini boutiques. The look of shock when I pulled out old faithful was like "Really? Really, Ali? Are you seriously going to wear that same black bikini, yet again?". And then they looked at me, sadly, with pity and said, "Oh yeah, we forgot. You can't buy anything, you are in Fashion Rehab".

Ugh, at this point, please don't remind me.

Lust-Have #28

Dr. Hauschka lipstick $23.95

Not the cheapest lipstick on the market, but for good reason. This lovely lippy is totally pure and natural. Most commercial i.e. corporate branded lipsticks have varying levels of gunk in them. (Lead, anyone?) Not these beauties. At this time of year, when we are all working so hard to quite putting junk in our mouths, why not take it a step further and quite putting junk on our mouths? Ladies? Are you with me?

Oh, but again, since I can't, could you?

Lust-Have #29

Topshop Basic Tank, $12

You are probably wondering why I am lusting over such a simple tank.
The truth is that this morning, in a deeply frustrated state, I took a pair of scissors to one of my tank tops in hopes of making the neckline deeper.
How did it turn out, you ask? Judging by the fact that I am seeking out its replacement, probably not very well.

Mountain Equipment Co-op Hut Booties $29 CDN

The picture is tiny but these Hut Booties give big love to cold toes. I'm not kidding - they are like sleeping bags for your feet. After seeing my old friend Jamie wearing a pair over a holiday visit at his home in Mahone Bay, I had to have a pair for myself (they're unisex. Mr. Darling has a pair, too!). I bought my first pair four years ago and they were a total winter lifesaver (along with my Sorels and my M0851 coat) - do you detect a theme here? It is not a coincidence that it is one of the coldest days of the year here. -25 with the wind.
Yikes.

Forever 21 tote $1.50

With a price like this, in the words of Mr. Darling, "It would almost be rude not to!" Too bad, cause I ain't allowed!
Just in time for Valentine's Day, I came across this adorable bag from F21. It brings to mind an old rhyme:

The Owl and the Pussycat went to sea
In a beautiful pea-green boat,
They took some honey, and plenty of money,
Wrapped in a five pound note...

Lust-Have #35

For those not in the know, our year without shopping includes more than just accessories and fashion pieces. We also cannot buy everyday items like socks, underwear, and athletic apparel. In a roundabout way we have limited ourselves from taking up new sports and leisure activities unless we already own the necessary gear. At this point I couldn't really start speed skating or taking ballet classes because I do not own a spandex catsuit or a tutu.
Tennis, however, I can play, as long as I am not invited to join a game at a club where there is a "white apparel only" rule on the court. (Yes those places still exist!) Fortunately, I am a proud member of my local YMCA where there is no enforced dress code. I wear my very stretched out yoga pants with a white men's Hanes tank and my regular running shoes. This, of course, does not stop me from still wanting this cute Adidas tennis dress. Since I will never actually play in Wimbledon, isn't owning a dress by that name the absolute next best thing?

Benefit Sugarbomb $28

I have been a faithful user of Benefit's Dandelion blush. Other than NARS Orgasm, I would say it is one of the best blushes on the market. Sugarbomb looks like it's older, more worldly sister. With a hint of shimmer and a bit 'o' bronze, it makes the perfect addition to any vanity.
Except mine.

Vroom vroom! This is not the first "Lust-Have" I have done featuring an item from Lauren Conrad. I may have a wee bit of a celebrity crush on her. I love all of the designs from her LC Lauren Conrad for Kohl's collection. You get so much style for such a small amount of money. The above jacket is on sale, too, so with that price it is even harder to say no!
(Unless, of course, you are in Fashion Rehab and the word "no" has become so regimented in your vocabulary that you can't even remember how it feels to say "yes".)

Someday, people, someday.

Summer Boatneck Pullover from L.L. Bean $39.50

Given the fact that nauticals are so in right now, I was really surprised how hard it was to find this perfectly classic sailor top. Leave it to L.L. Bean to keep things consistent. I especially love the 3/4 sleeves and the boatneck.
This is the perfect staple for any wardrobe - hopefully mine in 11 short (and by short, I mean loooooo-ng) days.

Where to start? First, thank you to my super stylish friend, Cat, for introducing me to this brand last weekend while we (coincidentally) mani-pedi'd together. It is free of Formaldehyde, Toluene, and DBP (Dibutyl Phthalate). I'm no scientist but all of those things sound pretty gross to me! Thank you, butter LONDON, for caring about the planet and our bodies.

And what about the color? I am such a sucker for great packaging and kitschy names! With Mother's Day just around the corner, what hot mama wouldn't want to be sporting this shade?

Lust-Have #59

This is my very last "Lust-Have" before Fashion Rehab is over. My personal #30 in the "If I Could...I Would" series. This saddens me but also makes me super excited! After all, we will be shopping (for real) in 8 days, right?

This bag barely needs an explanation. I love it. I wish it was mine. I visit it regularly onGucci.com and the Bergdorf's website. Unfortunately, much to my angst, I recently discovered that it just isn't my time for the "Big G". Something about this bag and being part of a single-income family, having a growing toddler, and a soon-to-be-happening fabulous trip to NYC just don't mix. It hurt a lot more than expected, but now it is time to let the dream go.

Someday, my friends, someday.

P.S. Don't forget to watch for our "Lust-Have Look Back" early next week!

Kenneth Jay Lane Bamboo Hoops $65 from ShopStyle

It is so hard, almost impossible to believe this is my last Lust-Have. Equally impossible to believe is the fact I do not own a pair of hoop earrings. Large, small, silver, gold. There is nary a round earring in sight in my jewellery box. Sadly, this is yet another "hole" I have discovered in my wardrobe (for more on that click here).

Happily, it may be filled by this time next week! Well, this time next week... plus a day.

Love, P

P.S. Be sure to check in next week when A and I do our "Lust-Have Look Back". We'll be combing our lists from the last 365 days and re-evaluating what we are still lusting after and what was just a spontaneous urge!
